I’m Nora. Born and raised in Canada, I was ten years old when I first realised that I (and everyone else) could make a positive difference in people’s lives. When I was in fifth grade, I was given an opportunity to help children who needed assistance with many aspects of their lives. Several times a week for two years, I witnessed their tears, smiles, laughter, pain and gratitude. It remains one of the most valuable experiences of my life. What experience opened your eyes to the needs of your community?

As an adult, I’ve been able to volunteer my time in different ways. I’ve seen firsthand that there are many people who need help. That fact remains at the forefront of my mind. Thankfully, there are many people who offer their support. Yet, more assistance is needed. Now, many groups and organisations have the power of the Web behind them. If you’re reading this post, you are probably well-aware of the impact of social media. It’s awesome, right?

My future posts will highlight the individual and organisational efforts that provide necessary support to various groups of people. When applicable, website and social media use will be featured. Do you have an example of social media boosting the awareness of a good cause?

Come back next week to see some examples of social media put to good use.
